Galamsey causing baby deformities — Otumfuo expresses worry
Apart from its effect of degradation of the environment, the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has also observed the negative implications of illegal mining activities (galamsey) on the health of newborn babies in Ghana.
According to him, irresponsible mining is taking a toll on land and the health of the people all in the name of money.
“Galamsey has destroyed all our lands. This is influencing the majority of emerging diseases and deformities in babies from the long exposure to mercury in our water bodies.”, pointed out adding “Yet, complaints do not get any attention”
Otumfuo Osei Tutu II bemoaned when a team from the Kumasi Unit of the Multimedia Group paid a courtesy call on him at the Manhyia Palace.
“I couldn’t watch Erastus Asare Donkor’s documentary. I was overwhelmed with sadness. It’s painful. We have sold arable cocoa lands for these illegalities. The whole country’s security machinery was unable to fight this.” the King said.
