IMF bailout: I won’t run from realities — Oppong- Nkrumah pokes Mahama

As an unusual politician in Africa more especially in Ghana, Information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has admitted Ghana’s economy remains stumbled despite the first trench of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) bailout.

However, as usual of Ghanaian politicians he was quick to draw former President John Mahama into the conversation.

“The entire world has had economic challenges. I was watching a speech of former President Mahama delivered abroad just about a week ago where he explains how the challenges in the global economy affected the Ghanaian economy”, The Probe program on November 12.

“Anytime I speak about the IMF, I am quick to mention the IMF program transaction is not the solution to our problems,” added.

The government last week issued a statement disclaiming a news report that it had missed a November 1 deadline for the release of the second tranche of US$600 million out of the IMF bailout.

The minister explained: “The first review has been concluded and Ghana was successful in that review.

“I think at the end of that review, there was a joint conference between Ghana’s Finance Minister and the Head of the IMF team, and a staff-level agreement was signed and announced to undergird our parts of the first review.” Hon. Oppong-Nkrumah stated.
