It was a day set aside to announce to the whole country that the 2024 General Election is upon us and creation of awareness has commmenced.

The maiden edition of the Democracy Cup was aimed at promoting parliamentary democracy through sports.

The two giant clubs of Ghanaian football were selected to face off with the winner to play DC United of the USA.

The day got off to an exciting start with a curtain raiser been played between Parliament XI and Ex-Black Stars Players.

The encounter surprisingly ended 3-1 in favour of the Parliamentary XI. The MPs warned Ex-Black Stars Players to expect a tough match and they walked the talk.

The main event for the day ended in a 2-1 success for the Porcupine Warriors making it three consecutive wins over their arch rivals Accra Hearts of Oak.

Skipper Justice Blay opened the scoring for Asante Kotoko through penalty kick in the 32nd minute. The Porcupine Warriors ended the first half leading by a lone goal.

With just two minutes into the second half, Hearts of Oak’s new signing Asamoah Boateng Afriyie levelled the score for the Phobians. The fomer Nations FC striker scored his second goal against the Porcupine Warriors after scoring the winner for Nations in Week 23 of the 2023-24 Ghana Premier League.

Peter Amidu’s 60th minute strike made it 2-1 to Asante Kotoko and it proved to be the winner.

The game had a huge significance as it served as a big pre-season game for both sides. Asante Kotoko will meet MLS side DC United for a friendly game as the winner was assured a game against the USA team.

The 2024 General Election will be held on Saturday 7th December 2024.
