It was left with just two slots for the 32 teams to be complete for the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup to be played in the USA in next summer.

Clubs, coaches and administrators have bitterly complained about the timing of the competition but it looks 99% likely that the competition will go ahead.

Inter Miami have been awarded a spot after the club won the MLS Supporters Shield – which is given to the club in the MLS with the best regular game season. Inter Miami is co-owned by former Manchester United and England icon, David Beckham.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino said, “I have three things to tell you! The 1st, many congratulations for winning the Supporters Shield! The 2nd, you will be qualified for the FIFA Club World Cup 2025! And 3rd, you will be opening and hosting the opening game at the Hard Rock Stadium in front of 65.000 people!”

The expanded 32-team tournament will be held in the United States in 2025 from 15 June to 3 July next year.

The tournament will be made up of 12 teams from Europe, six from South America, 12 from Asia, Africa and North America with the final two spots going to one club from Oceania and another from the United States – the host.
