It is four years and six days since Russia invaded Ukraine at the time of writing. 55,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed, and 160,000 people fighting on the side of Russia have been killed as well. These are some of the deadly casualties confirmed now, per official reports from the Ukrainian government.
On a visit to Kyiv, Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, made a shocking revelation about how Ghanaians have suffered in the war.
The minister revealed that at least 272 Ghanaians have been lured into the war, with 55 confirmed dead. Two are currently in a Ukrainian prison assisting investigations, according to the government of Ukraine.
Sam Okudzeto Ablakwa described the figures as “depressing and frightening,” saying Ghana “cannot turn a blind eye to these heartbreaking statistics”.
He confirmed that more than 1,700 people from 36 countries in Africa had been recruited to fight for Russia, mostly by force pretence, with Ghana the country to have lost the most men.
Cameroon have reported that 94 of its nationals have been killed in the war, according to the local media reports, even though the government has yet to make any announcement on the casualties.
One Kenyan and two South Africans have been confirmed dead. Many believe that the numbers are inaccurate, as they think that more Africans have been killed in the war.
Okudzeto implored the Ukrainian government to be ‘magnanimous and compassionate’ with the two Ghanaians in their prison.
