In group A, Sudanese giants Al-Hilal Omdurman topped the group after winning 10 points, one more ahead of second-placed MC Alger. Tanzanian side Young Africans who were heavily fancied to qualify failed to beat MC Alger at home in the winner-takes-all, causing their exit. Surprisingly, TP Mazembe, five times winners of the competition finished bottom of the group with just 5 points.
In Group B, FAR Rabat and Mamelodi Sundowns qualified ahead of three-time winners Raja Casablanca. It was only two points that separated the top three. Congolese side Maniema finished bottom of the group as expected after drawing three and losing three
Orlando Pirates’ victory in Cairo against Al Ahly helped the Bucs top Group C. Defending champions Al Ahly finished second on the table. Belouizdad finished third with a point behind the second-placed team. Stade d’Abidjan disastrously won a point out of the available 18.
In Group D, Esperance du Tunis won 13 points just like Pyramids but topped the group due to a superior head-to-head record against the Egyptians. As expected, Sagrada Esparanca of Angola and Djoliba AC of Mali finished third and fourth respectively. Sagrada won 5 points as Djoliba won two.
