A 10% betting tax was introduced in August 2023 by the government led by His Excellency Nana Akufo-Addo, much to the disappointment of punters. They complained, groaned, and moaned, but nothing was done about it.

10% was taxed on every win in Ghana’s betting industry. The youth never agreed with the government.

In John Mahama’s campaign ahead of the general elections on 7th December 2024, the current president promised Ghanaians to abolish the 10% on winnings.

Truthfully, John Mahama and his government have announced the cancellation of the 10% tax.

Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, the Finance Minister of Ghana during the reading of the 2025 Budget announced, “We have programmed the following taxes for removal in line with our manifesto promises. Mr speaker, we will abolish the 10% tax on winning from lottery,” he said.

“The removal of these taxes will ease the burden on households and improve their disposable income. It will support business growth and improve tax compliance,” the Finance Minister said.

The punters are extremely with the latest news in town as many have complained about losing millions to the government on their winnings.

The government never accounted for a penny of the betting taxes they took in almost two years.
