Liverpool were the overwhelming favourites ahead of the English League Cup final on Sunday despite their morale-killing defeat in the UCL last Tuesday against PSG. The Reds had won 43 trophies since Newcastle United last won anything making the difference between the clubs a vast one.
It was a David v Goliath affair at the Wembley Sports Stadium, with David defeating Goliath.
Newcastle United started pretty well by attacking the Reds. In their bid to clinch a first domestic title in 70 years, the attacking trio of Harvey Barnes, Jacob Murphy and Alex Isak were all over Liverpool’s defence.
The midfield trio of Joelinton, Tonali, and skipper Bruno was all over the pitch, making things difficult for Liverpool’s midfield and defence.
32-year-old big centre-back Dan Burn, who got a deserved call-up to the Three Lions by new England boss Thomas Tuchel, gave the Magpies a 1-0 lead on the stroke of halftime.
Eddie Howe’s men went to the break leading by a lone goal. It was now a huge test of how strong Newcastle United was mentally.
Newcastle started the second half on a good note just to increase their lead to put the game beyond Liverpool.
Isak’s 51st-minute strike was ruled out for offside. He scored a minute later to make it 2-0 to help the Magpies enjoy a comfortable lead.
Substitute Chiesa pulled one back for Liverpool in the 94th minute. Newcastle defended pretty well and lifted their first title in 56 years.
Liverpool’s season has dramatically changed in the space of five days after exiting the Champions League and losing the EFL finals.
It is only the Premier League the Reds can win.
