Footballers are playing too many games at the moment because FIFA and UEFA keep adding new competitions to the already many ones. Footballers have been complaining every day about the minutes they play, and Football’s authorities have decided to listen to them in some way.

The UEFA Champions League is a prestigious competition because of its competitiveness and beauty. The competition becomes boring the moment a game reaches extra time, as it always favours the home team.

UEFA has decided to make so many changes to their illustrious competition, with an extra set to be scrapped. Teams will now go straight to penalties to decide any tie after a draw in 90 minutes.

Also, teams that will finish in the top eight in the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League will get the opportunity to play the second legs of the knockout ties at home in round 16, quarter-finals and semifinals. The reason is to make the league phase as competitive as the knockout stage.

Teams from the same nation won’t be able to face each other in the round 16, but would in the quarter finals, semi finals and finals.

Summary of the new changes in the UCL from the 2025-26 season

1. From next season’s UEFA Champions League:

2. There will be no extra time, but instead a penalty shootout.

3. The teams that finish in the Top 8 will play the second leg at home for the Quarterfinals and Semifinals.

4. For the Round of 16, teams from the same country will not be allowed to play each other.
