The three states have announced 29 January 2026 as the exact date to break away from the toothless West African regional bloc ECOWAS. They have accused ECOWAS of being so soft against Western powers and have also failed to organise a proper army to defend them.

Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger are strengthening their ties in a bid to fight jihadist violence that have caused the trio to suffer immensely. They have agreed to create a 5,000-strong group to battle their enemies to end years of suffocation.

Sahel’s Confederation was formed after the three countries’ military leaders agreed to join forces.

Burkina Faso’s 37-year-old president, Captain Ibrahim Traore, has recently been facing backlash from the US government after being accused of being an enemy of Democracy.
