Mac-Albert Hengari, 59, has been sacked by the Namibian government from his role as the minister of agriculture after being accused of raping a 21 year old unnamed lady 5 years ago.
The former minister was arrested on Saturday after he was accused of attempting to bribe the victim.
The veteran politician on Monday appeared before a magistrate’s court at the capital, Windhoek and has to remain in custody after being denied bail. Hengari will appear at the court on June 3rd 2025, where the next hearing is scheduled.
The opposition Independent Patriots for Change said Hengari’s arrest “on allegations of rape, kidnapping and forced abortion” was a “profound failure of leadership and exposes the hollowness of government rhetoric on gender-based violence”.
They also heavily criticised the government led by 72-year-old Nandi Ndaitwah, the first female president of the 3 million populated South African nation.
Namibia is fighting gender violence, as the country reported 4,814 cases in 2024.
Hengari is expected to face the law even though he is one of the close allies of the president.
