Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, is at the center of public backlash after flaunting what appears to be two ultra-premium smartphones during a recent live television interview.

The display has sparked widespread criticism on social media, with many questioning the ethics of such opulence in the face of ongoing economic challenges and austerity measures championed by the government.

During the segment, sharp-eyed viewers identified the devices as Huawei Mate Xs 2 Ultimate 5G smartphones, each retailing for approximately $11,809, totaling $23,618.

The phones are equipped with 1TB of storage and 16GB of RAM, featuring foldable OLED displays and top-tier specifications, making them some of the most expensive commercially available smartphones on the global market.

The incident, which took place over the weekend, has been widely circulated online, prompting many netizens to express outrage over what they consider to be a tone-deaf display of luxury.

The controversy comes at a time when he announced that President has warned none of his appointees should hold any lavish birthday parties and rather to adopt modest lifestyles amid an economic recovery effort.

Interesting, Felix Kwakye Ofosu has attracted attention for perceived contradictions in public messaging.

Over the weekend, the minister was reported to have hosted a private birthday celebration within the Jubilee House.

Critics point out that this runs contrary to a government directive allegedly issued by his own ministry, cautioning against birthday parties and lavish spending by public officials.

The situation has further escalated with opposition figures and civil society groups raising concerns about the GHC78 million budget allocated to his ministry, questioning whether such funds are being used responsibly.

Some allege that the budget is being channeled into high-end “propaganda gadgets” to shape public opinion, although these claims remain unsubstantiated at this time.

The ministry has not yet issued an official response to the criticism, nor has Felix Kwakye Ofosu addressed the allegations or offered clarification regarding the phones’ origin—whether they were government property, personal acquisitions, or gifts.
