The Spanish La Liga was decided on Thursday night after Barcelona, in the Catalan Derby, defeated local rivals Espanyol 2-0. The win helped the club open a seven-point gap over second-placed Real Madrid with two rounds to end the season.

The RCDE Stadium in Cornella de Llobregat was ready to suspend Barcelona’s imminent title but was not up to the task of facing Hansi Flick’s inform side.

After a gruelling goalless draw in the first half, 17-year-old Lamine Yamal opened the scoring with a sublime curling shot outside the 18-yard box. The goal put Barcelona in a pole position for the La Liga title. Hansi Flick’s youthful side dominated almost all aspects of the game because they were on the edge of glory.

Fermin Lopez, in the 95th minute, fired the ball from the edge of the box to double Barcelona’s lead to end Espanyol’s dream of equalising.

It was Barcelona’s 28th La Liga title, with 8 more behind the leaders Real Madrid, who have won the competition on 36 occasions. Barcelona last won the title in the 2022-23 season.
