The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives’ Association (GRNMA) has announced the suspension of its ongoing strike, which began on June 2nd, 2025, following a series of industrial actions.
The decision comes after the association describes what it terms “misinformation, disinformation, and propaganda” surrounding their demands.
In a press release dated June 13th, 2025, the GRNMA stated that the primary demand of its members was the full implementation of the Collective Agreement of Ghanaian Nurses and Midwives, which was signed in May 2024.
The association emphasized that this agreement was “duly implemented without any further delay.”
Addressing concerns raised by the public and government, the GRNMA clarified several points:
- The association reiterated that nurses and midwives are trained to provide essential health services and that their industrial action was a last resort to bring critical matters affecting their profession to the attention of the employer. They stressed that this was done “in good faith.”
- The GRNMA asserted that its members “do not take delight in seeing our patients suffer,” and that they “cannot take good care of others when the system does not take good care of us.”
- Finally, the association clarified its non-partisan professional status, stating that it has been a professional association and trade union for 65 years. The GRNMA emphasized its historical role since 1960 in building a stronger and more resilient health system in Ghana, always representing the best interests of its members’ welfare and working conditions.
