Former Asante Kotoko Board Chairman, Herbert Mensah, has urged the GFA to severely punish hooligans in Ghana football. Hooliganism has become part of Ghana football as all levels of domestic football are struggling to deal with perpetrators at the various league grounds.
Almost every weekend, the country records an unwanted case where either referees, officials, footballers or fans have been assaulted.
Herbert Mensah thinks that the GFA has been lenient with hooliganism issues and advised the leaders of Ghana football to go hard on them.
“The Ghana Football Association (GFA) themselves have got to stop talking so much and do more,” Herbert said.
“[The FA should] put in the same measures that have been put in around the world. The clubs have a sense of responsibility—they have to. You see abroad where people receive life bans. There are cameras in place to pick things up,” Mr. Mensah said.
Hooliganism in football is a major problem in world football, but many countries have a way of stopping it. With cameras around and inside venues, hooligans are always identified and punished, but in Ghana, it is the other way round.
A staunch Kotoko fan was stabbed to death at the Nana Konamansah II Stadium in Nsoatre when Nsoatreman hosted Asante Kotoko in the Ghana Premier League on 2nd February in the just-ended season.
