Chairman Wontumi is the founder and bankroller of Akonta Mining, whose sole profession is mining.

One person believed to be a close associate of Chairman Wontumi and his Akonta Mining has been arrested by the Police. Boss of CID, DCOP Lydia Donkor has confirmed that an investigation is ongoing, with more people expected to be arrested.

The CID boss also revealed that Chairman Wontumi, NPP’s chairman for Ashanti Region is still under investigations for illegal mining and is expected to appear before them anytime soon. Womumi jas howver denied all allegations that he is into illegal mining by stating it clearly that he has legal documents for the profession.

Another man, named Akuoko, who the CID’s investigations say is part of the mining syndicate, has also been arrested for his involvement in illegal mining, which is destroying Ghana’s natural environment.

Illegal mining in Ghana is a crime, but people are not being prosecuted for the crime.
