A police officer identified only as Sammy is currently receiving treatment at the Police Hospital in Accra after being stabbed in a shocking daylight attack by a suspected criminal at Lower McCarthy Hill.
The assailant, believed to be a known drug user in the area, reportedly ambushed the officer while he was on a routine school drop-off with his children on Monday morning, July 7, 2025.
Reports said the officer, who was in plain clothes at the time, was targeted around 7:00 a.m.
The attacker, said to be a local resident and repeat offender involved in the use and possible sale of narcotics (commonly referred to locally as a “wee” smoker), allegedly recognized the officer from a previous confrontation in which the officer had cautioned him against his illicit behavior.
Residents familiar with both the officer and the suspect told Graphic that tensions had been simmering between the two men for some time.
The officer had on several occasions warned the suspect about disturbing the peace and engaging in criminal activities in the neighborhood.
These warnings appear to have provoked the suspect into launching a retaliatory and potentially premeditated attack.
According to eyewitness accounts, the suspect approached the officer with a knife and launched the assault. In an attempt to defend himself and neutralize the threat, the policeman drew his service weapon and fired multiple shots at close range.
Shockingly, none of the bullets struck the assailant. Eyewitnesses speculated that the suspect might have been under the influence of drugs or relying on supposed spiritual fortification or “juju,” which emboldened him against gunfire.
As the confrontation intensified, the suspect reportedly tried to seize the officer’s weapon.
A fierce struggle ensued, during which the officer was stabbed in the right rib. The suspect fled the scene immediately after the stabbing.
A witness identified as Quartey described the suspect as a notorious troublemaker who frequently caused disturbances in the community.
“Sometimes he comes around with boys on motorbikes, harassing people and creating chaos,” he said.
The Ghana Police Service has confirmed the incident and launched a full-scale investigation into the attack.
The Head of Public Affairs for the Accra Regional Police Command, Superintendent Juliana Obeng, said the suspect is known to the authorities and efforts are underway to apprehend him.
Police have since intensified patrols in the area and appealed to residents to assist with any relevant information that could lead to the arrest of the suspect.
