The Black Queens of Ghana won the 3rd of the four tickets to the semi-finals of the 2024 WAFCON after defeating Algeria 4-2 on penalties after a gruelling 120 minutes of football. The game ended goalless in all four halves played, with both sides defending well, also missing opportunities to carry the day.

Ghana in the first half was a bit ahead of Algeria, where they even scored through Stella Nyamekye, who scored in the 27th minute but was disallowed due to offside. The was the biggest moment in the first 45 minutes.

The second half was almost a 50-50 affair with Ghana preventing them from threatening them. None of their 5 shots were on target, whereas Ghana abysmally had only one shot in the whole half.

The game ended goalless in the 90 minutes, where extra time was required to separate the two teams.

The extra time failed to produce much danger from both sides, with Algeria having the only shot on target in the whole 30 minutes.

A penalty shootout was left to separate the two teams. Ghana scored all four they took with Bonsu Kyerewaa, Boaduwaa Doris, Boye-Hlorkah and Evelyn Badu all successfully converting their spot kicks.

Algeria scored two and missed two, with Dafeur and Belloumou missing. Dafeur and Taleb Muller scored theirs.

It was the first time Ghana had qualified for the semi-finals of the AFCON since 2016 in Cameroon. The Black Queens have made it on 8 occasions to the last four of the tournament.

Lars Bjorkeren’s Black Queens have a date against the marvellous Morocco, which defeated Mali 3-1.
