The Government of Ghana has sent the Armed Forces to Bawku and nearby areas due to an increase in violence associated with a longstanding chieftaincy dispute.
The intervention represents a notable change from peacekeeping to active measures to enforce peace, intending to restore order and prevent additional loss of life.
On July 27, 2025, the Presidency released a statement indicating that recent incidents could reverse the progress made in mediation and urged for stronger measures.
The Armed Forces are responsible for upholding law and order and ensuring the safety of residents, including students.
This comes after the death of a student, Hakim Kundima, at Bawku Senior High School, resulting in the school’s temporary closure.
The government recognised the contributions of traditional leaders, such as the Otumfuo, Nayiri, and Zugraana, in past mediation efforts; however, it pointed out that recent violence has weakened those achievements.
The Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has updated the curfew hours for Bawku Municipality and nearby areas to strengthen control.
The new curfew will take effect immediately and will be in place starting at 2:00 p.m. until 6:00 a.m. Daily, according to an Executive Instrument recommended by the Upper East Regional Security Council.
The government has urged residents to fully cooperate with the Armed Forces in their bid to restore stability and peace in the region.
