Former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, will today, Tuesday officially declared his intention to contest for the flagbearership of the party, launching a fresh bid to lead the NPP ahead of the 2028 general elections.

In a video podcast released ahead of the official announcement slated for today, July 29, 2025, Agyepong stated that his decision is motivated by a strong conviction to restore the founding values of the NPP—service, sacrifice, and selflessness—which he believes have been eroded over time.

“Ghana deserves a leadership with integrity. A leadership that fixes the system. We can build a competent state where merit—not money—rules,” he declared.

Agyepong, 63, is making his third attempt at the party’s presidential primaries, having first contested in 2007 and 2023.

His campaign, dubbed “The New Dawn,” is centered on six major pillars: building a robust and resilient economy, enforcing prudent fiscal responsibility, promoting social cohesion, restoring meritocracy and professionalism in public service, ensuring government efficiency, and deepening accountability to the people.

A Long Road in Politics

Kwabena Agyepong’s political journey dates back to the early 1990s when Ghana returned to multiparty democracy.

He played active roles in the presidential campaigns of Prof. Albert Adu Boahen (1992), John Agyekum Kufuor (1996, 2000), and later served as Presidential Press Secretary under President Kufuor.

His political rise culminated in his election as NPP General Secretary in 2014.

However, his tenure was cut short when he was suspended in 2015, alongside then-Chairman Paul Afoko and Vice-Chairman Sammy Crabbe, over allegations of misconduct.

A trained civil engineer and media personality, Agyepong has also worked with the Ghana Highway Authority and later established his engineering consultancy firm. He gained national recognition in the 1990s as a host of GTV’s “Sports Highlights.”

A Call for Internal Reform

Beyond his presidential bid, Agyepong has also been a leading advocate for reforms within the NPP.

In April this year, he submitted a memorandum to the party’s Constitution Amendment Committee, chaired by Frank Davies, calling for the abolition of Article 13(9) of the party’s constitution.

The provision mandates the use of a special electoral college to trim down presidential aspirants to five, a process he described as undemocratic and open to manipulation.

“The current structure of this special college—comprising fewer than one thousand (1000) members—is susceptible to manipulation and undermines democratic fairness,” he argued.

He proposed the creation of constituency caucuses comprising Members of Parliament, DCEs, Constituency Executives, Electoral Coordinators, Polling Station Executives, Patrons, and Elders to broaden participation in party decisions.

He also recommended that the NPP hold its presidential primaries first before any other internal elections, citing Article 13(1) of the party’s constitution to support a more logical and less divisive electoral schedule.

A Candidate of the Old Guard with New Ideas

Born on March 6, 1962, in Kumasi, Kwabena Agyepong is the son of the late Justice Kwadwo Agyei Agyepong, one of the three High Court judges abducted and murdered during the early years of the PNDC regime.

He is a product of Mfantsipim School and holds a BSc in Civil Engineering from KNUST.

His campaign message resonates with party faithful seeking a reset of the NPP’s direction following recent internal and national controversies.

Supporters describe him as a principled and disciplined figure with a long history of loyalty to the party.

Today’s official declaration is expected to galvanize both old and young members of the NPP who believe the party needs a return to its ideological core as it prepares for the political battles ahead.

Whether Agyepong’s message of reform and integrity will resonate enough to secure him the party’s ticket remains to be seen.

Meanwhile, the party is expected to open its presidential nominations from Today.
