The tragic incident occurred on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, during what has been described as a national assignment.

In a statement released by the NDC’s General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, the party expressed profound sorrow and shock at the loss of its stalwarts and the military officers who perished alongside them.

The deceased are:

1. Hon. Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Minister for Defence and a respected NDC figure known for his sharp intellect and commitment to national service.

2. Hon. Alhaji Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovations and Member of Parliament for Tamale Central, widely recognized for his advocacy on climate issues and social equity.

A National and Partisan Tragedy

The accident, described by party insiders as “devastating beyond measure,” has left a gaping hole within the leadership ranks of the NDC as the country readies itself for the 2028 general elections.

The NDC emphasized that these individuals were not only committed party leaders but national figures who epitomized patriotism, discipline, and public service.

In its statement, the party said, “We have lost not only loyal comrades, but also exemplary patriots who served Ghana with honour, courage, and unwavering dedication.”

The leadership, members, and grassroots of the party have been urged to stay united during this period of grief and to honour the legacies of the departed.

A Broader Impact

The crash has drawn reactions across the political spectrum, with President John Mahama earlier describing the event as “one of the darkest days in our recent history.”

Remembering Their Legacy

The NDC concluded its statement with a pledge to uphold the values these individuals stood for—patriotism, selflessness, integrity, and nation-building.

“May their souls rest in perfect peace. May their legacy of service and sacrifice continue to inspire us all,” the statement signed by Fifi Fiavi Kwetey read.
