The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) is set to introduce a cashless payment system nationwide by the end of 2025, marking a significant milestone in the organization’s efforts to modernize its operations and improve healthcare delivery.

This initiative is part of the NHIA’s broader strategy to enhance revenue management, reduce financial leakages, and promote accountability.

The NHIA has been working towards improving its financial management systems, and the introduction of a cashless system is a key component of this effort.

The current system has been plagued by manual manipulations, lack of transparency, and accountability issues, which the new system aims to address.

According to the Acting Deputy Chief Executive of Finance and Investments, Anatu Anne Seidu Bogobiri, the cashless system will reduce manual manipulations, improve transparency, and promote accountability in NHIA’s operations ².

How The System Works

The cashless system, which is being piloted in four selected District Offices, allows members to make electronic payments for membership registration fees using their mobile wallets.

The system utilizes the New Membership Tool 2 (NMT 2), also known as Yet Another Modern Membership System (YAMMS), to process transactions securely.

The YAMMS platform enables users to efficiently manage membership data, process payments, and perform other critical functions.

Benefits of the Cashless System

The introduction of the cashless system is expected to have several benefits, including:

– *Reduced Financial Leakages*: The system will help to eliminate financial leakages and reduce the risks associated with cash handling.

– *Improved Transparency*: The system will provide a transparent and accountable way of managing financial transactions.

– *Enhanced Efficiency*: The system will streamline payment processes, reducing queues and improving the overall efficiency of NHIA’s operations.

Implementation Timeline

The piloting phase of the cashless system is expected to be completed by the end of August, and the system will be rolled out nationwide by the end of 2025.

The NHIA has expressed optimism that the introduction of the cashless system will significantly mitigate the challenges facing the Authority, particularly in district-level financial management.
