The race for the opposition NPP’s flagbearer role is getting keener every day as all the candidates are campaigning to convince delegates and the gurus of the party to vote for them.

Abetifi MP Bryan Acheampong on Saturday, 23rd August, made a shocking comment about the NPP’s landslide defeat during the 2024 General Election, where the presidential candidate Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia lost woefully to NDC’s John Mahama.

Bryan Acheampong’s comments;

“President Kufuor won all NPP votes in Kusasi and President Akufo-Addo also did the same thing, but because the fight is between two tribes (Mamprusis and Kusasis) and we elected a flagbearer from one of them, we lost in Oti Region, Upper East, Upper West and the Northern Region,” he explained.

“We lost all our seats because of the candidate we presented [Dr Mahamudu Bawumia], and he could be a victim of circumstance and not his fault, but the timing didn’t favour him,” Bryan added.

The party is still not over the defeat as they don’t believe that only 38% per cent vote was won.

The postmortem continues after eight months, with the MP of Abetifi telling members of the party.

On Sunday, 24th August, Dr Bawumia, early in the morning, met some of the party’s loyal fans and expressed his disappointment in Bryan’s unfortunate comments.

Bawumia said;

“As we go into the primaries, I am very concerned and troubled that some of our presidential aspirants have embarked on religious and tribal bigotry and propaganda against me. In a desperate attempt to win votes, they totally ignore the data and findings on why we lost the 2024 election and want to mislead delegates and the party wings with such propaganda,” he said.

“An aspirant has said delegates should not vote for me because I am a Mamprusi man and that I will lose votes in the Kusasi and other areas. This is very unfortunate and demonstrates a complete lack of understanding of the situation,” Bawumia revealed.

Kennedy Agyapong, Osei Adutwum, Bryan Acheampong, and Mahamudu Bawumia are so far the four candidates to contest for the NPP’s hot seat for the 2026 General Elections.
