The Chief of Akyem Wenchi, Daasebere Dr. Assumadu Nyarko Appiah, has issued a strong appeal for peace in the run-up to the Akwatia by-election, cautioning political stakeholders and residents against any acts of electoral violence that could tarnish the constituency’s reputation.
Speaking at his palace on Sunday, during a courtesy visit by the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, and his delegation, the Chief emphasized the importance of conducting the polls peacefully.
He disclosed that he had personally engaged both the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidates, as well as sub-chiefs, to instruct their supporters to refrain from confrontations.
“This election is not about violence,” the Chief said. “Cast your vote for your preferred candidate and return home peacefully. I urge religious leaders – both pastors and imams – to preach peace so that this election can be conducted without incident.”
Daasebere Assumadu Nyarko Appiah also advised residents to avoid crowding collation centres on election day unless they are officially involved.
“If you are not voting in Akwatia, you have no business there. Allow only the party agents to perform their duties,” he stressed.
The visit from the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, reflected the government’s commitment to traditional protocols and engagement with local authorities before campaign activities.
Upon arrival, Debrah and his team sought the blessings of the Oseawuo Division of Akyem Abuakwa, honoring established customs.
Addressing the chiefs, Debrah assured them of the government’s dedication to delivering development projects to Akwatia, stating: “We thank you for welcoming us, and we promise you that we will not disappoint you.” He further extended an invitation to the chiefs to appoint three representatives to visit Jubilee House, where they can present social needs and concerns, with the goal of achieving sustainable solutions.
This call for peace follows historical tensions in the constituency, which has previously witnessed incidents of political skirmishes during elections.
By emphasizing dialogue and adherence to protocol, local authorities hope to ensure that the upcoming by-election proceeds smoothly, safeguarding both voter safety and the integrity of the democratic process.
