Luis Suárez may face a significant suspension after seemingly spitting at an opposing coach following the Leagues Cup final on Sunday night.
The event occurred after the final whistle when Suárez’s Inter Miami lost 3-0 to the Seattle Sounders.
Television footage after the game captured the 38-year-old forward confronting a member of the Seattle coaching staff angrily.
Oscar Ustari, a teammate of Suárez on Inter Miami, tried to step in before the former Liverpool player seemed to spit at a staff member.
Players from both teams needed to be separated after a large brawl occurred on the field.
This represents the most recent occurrence in a series of unpleasant events that have affected the forward’s career.
In 2011, three months after transferring from Ajax to Liverpool, Suárez received an eight-match suspension following a Football Association investigation that found he had racially abused Manchester United defender Patrice Evra.
Two years later, the Uruguayan player received a 10-game suspension for biting Branislav Ivanovic during a match against Chelsea.
He performed the same action at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, biting Giorgio Chiellini on the shoulder during Uruguay’s group-stage match against Italy.
The then red-hot Uruguayan striker was banned for four months from all football-related activities. He waited for the ban to elapse before making his debut for his new team, Barcelona, in October, as he missed eight games.
Seattle Sounders’ head coach comments
“Unfortunately, that is gonna take some attention away from what was a great Sounders performance,” Brian Schmetzer said in an interview.
“I can take it as a compliment that their players were frustrated, and frustrations led to things that shouldn’t happen on the field. But that shouldn’t be the story.”
