A 30-year-old trader has defrauded a female police officer out of Ghc308,000 in a recruitment scam, which has shocked the security services sector in Ghana.
Joseph Diawuo reportedly took the money from the police officer by claiming he was recruiting 46 individuals for the Ghana Police Service, Ghana Immigration Service and the Ghana Armed Forces.
Diawuo, who lived in Dominase in the Ashanti region, successfully persuaded a police officer stationed at Airport Barracks in Accra to gather the unaware victims.
The young man demanded between Ghc6,000 and Ghc10,000 from the victims to obtain protocol slots in the specified security agencies.
Thirty-eight of the victims contributed Ghc6,000 each, resulting in a total of Ghc228,000.
Additionally, eight victims paid Ghc10,000 each, totalling Ghc80,000.
After receiving the money, Diawuo reportedly arranged for medical examinations for all the victims at a healthcare facility in Santasi, located in the Ashanti Region.
Following this, he is said to have gone into hiding and severed all communication with the police officer.
The officer subsequently informed the police about the situation. Diawuo has been arrested, brought to court, and has now received a four-year prison sentence.
