Kosovo’s Independent Media Commission (IMC) has struck a deal with TikTok’s European office, allowing citizens to lodge complaints about harmful or election-related content, with the platform promising a response within 24 hours.

TikTok Complaints Addressed Within a Day

Kosovo citizens now have a formal mechanism to challenge TikTok content, following a new agreement between the Independent Media Commission (IMC) and the platform’s European office. Under the arrangement, all complaints filed through the IMC will be reviewed by TikTok within 24 hours.

The initiative was announced by IMC chairman Besnik Berisha during an appearance on the Përballje podcast on Telegrafi. He explained that the agreement provides Kosovo users with a direct avenue to raise concerns, particularly around harmful material and content linked to election integrity.

“I can mention that we also have an agreement with TikTok’s director for Europe. As the Independent Media Commission, we have agreed that complaints that come in relation to TikTok, we can address them directly there. They have voluntarily committed to handling any complaint sent by the IMC within 24 hours,” Berisha said.

Safeguarding Elections and Media Standards

The collaboration extends beyond election periods, covering issues related to privacy violations, inappropriate material, and breaches of wider media standards. According to Berisha, this ensures that any content capable of causing significant harm will be swiftly examined and addressed.

He stressed the importance of the agreement in reinforcing transparency and accountability in the digital space, especially as social media platforms grow in influence. “Citizens now have a clear address to send their complaints. After receiving the complaint from the IMC, TikTok reviews and decides on the content within 24 hours,” Berisha added.

Strengthening Oversight in the Digital Era

The deal marks a significant step in strengthening oversight of social media platforms in Kosovo. With TikTok’s growing role in shaping public opinion, particularly among younger users, the IMC’s new mechanism is expected to play a vital role in safeguarding democratic processes and protecting users from harmful digital content.

The arrangement also sets a precedent for cooperation between national regulatory bodies and international technology platforms, reflecting broader efforts across Europe to ensure online spaces remain safe and accountable.

A New Era of Digital Accountability

Kosovo’s partnership with TikTok introduces a fast and transparent system that empowers citizens to raise concerns directly and receive timely responses. By committing to a 24-hour review window, TikTok has acknowledged the importance of accountability in managing digital content.

As Berisha highlighted, the initiative provides both protection and reassurance to citizens, ensuring that harmful or misleading content does not linger unchecked. In a region where social media continues to shape political discourse and daily life, this mechanism signals a new era of digital responsibility.
