Beatrice Chebet won the 5000 meters at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, representing Kenya, on Saturday, September 20.

Chebet, who won gold in the 10,000 meters last Saturday, overtook 1500 meters champion Faith Kipyegon in the final stretch to achieve a long-distance double victory.

The 25-year-old has not lost a 5000m or 10,000m race for two years, except at the Kenyan national trials.

She has now obtained a complete set of distance titles at international championships following her two victories in Paris 2024.

In a gradually paced race, Kipyegon followed her younger teammate until she moved ahead with 600 meters remaining as the speed picked up.

Nadia Battocletti from Italy was in the lead as they approached the final lap, but she was quickly overtaken by two runners from Kenya, with Gudaf Tsegay from Ethiopia close behind her.

Kipyegon took the lead initially, but Chebet remained composed before pulling ahead in the final 60 meters.

Battocletti finished in a strong third place, adding to her silver medal in the 10,000 meters, while Shelby Houlihan from the USA overtook a tiring Tsegay to secure fourth place.
