President John Dramani Mahama has departed Accra for New York to participate in the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 80), scheduled to open on Tuesday, September 23, 2025.

His trip underscores the growing engagement in global diplomacy, trade, and international development as the country positions itself on the world stage.

President Mahama is billed to address the General Assembly on Thursday, September 25, where he is expected to highlight Africa’s role in shaping global policy and push for stronger reforms in international financial governance.

His speech comes at a time when African leaders are intensifying calls for fairer trade agreements, debt restructuring mechanisms, and increased representation within global financial institutions.

As the African Union’s designated “champion for financial institutions,” President Mahama’s presence carries additional weight.

He will convene two high-level side events that focus on strengthening Africa’s financial architecture and mobilizing resources for sustainable development across the continent.

Beyond the General Assembly, the Ghanaian leader’s itinerary is packed with critical bilateral meetings.

He is scheduled to hold talks with UN Secretary-General António Guterres and several heads of state on security, trade, and regional cooperation. Mahama will also meet with global leaders in philanthropy and development, including the President of the Rockefeller Foundation, as Ghana seeks new partnerships to advance its national priorities.

In a historic first, President Mahama will visit the NASDAQ stock exchange in New York, where he is expected to ring the closing bell—an event symbolizing the growing interest in attracting international investment and strengthening ties with the global business community.

He will further engage with the US-Africa Chamber of Commerce to explore trade and investment opportunities.

The First Lady, Lordina Dramani Mahama, is also scheduled to play an active role during the visit.

She will join fellow African First Ladies under the Organisation of African First Ladies for Development (OAFLAD) in addressing development challenges, with a focus on women and children.

In addition, Mrs. Mahama will deliver the keynote speech at a special World Vision International prayer service dedicated to children’s welfare and global peace.

The President’s delegation reflects the significance of the mission.

It includes high-ranking government officials such as Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, Executive Secretary Dr. Callistus Mahama, Special Aide and Presidential Advisor Joyce Bawah Mogtari, and Deputy Chief of Staff for Finance and Administration Nana Oye Bampoe Addo.

Also on the team are Minister for Foreign Affairs Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Minister for Health Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, Minister for Trade, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, Presidential Spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu, and Ghana Investment Promotion Centre Chief Executive Simon Madjie.

This year’s UNGA session is expected to deliberate on pressing global challenges including climate change, sustainable financing, international peace and security, and the role of technology in development.

The delegation is expected to contribute actively to these discussions while leveraging opportunities for bilateral cooperation and foreign direct investment.

President Mahama and his team are scheduled to return to Accra on September 30, 2025.
