Kwabena Agyepong, a presidential aspirant of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has urged President John Mahama to make a conscious effort to promote local football in Ghana.

Speaking on Luv FM, Agyepong expressed disappointment in the lack of media coverage and attention given to Ghana’s premier league, which he believes is in need of government support for rebuilding.

Challenges Facing Local Football

Kwabena Agyepong highlighted the competition from international football broadcasts, which makes it difficult for local matches to attract patrons.

He noted that fans are often given a choice between paying for DSTV to watch international football and attending a match at the stadium, which is more expensive.

This, he said, puts pressure on local football, and there is a need for increased media coverage and promotion.

Need For Government Support

Agyepong emphasized the importance of government support in promoting local football.

He believes that the government should be deliberate about projecting the Ghana Premier League to attract more fans and sponsors.

According to him, this can be achieved through increased media coverage, promotion, and investment in local football infrastructure.

The lack of media coverage and promotion has had a negative impact on local football in Ghana.

Many fans prefer to watch international football on DSTV rather than attending local matches, which are often less well-promoted.

This has resulted in low attendance and revenue for local football clubs, making it challenging for them to compete with international teams.
