The Alliance of the Sahel States, consisting of Burkina Faso, Niger, and Mali, has officially withdrawn from the International Criminal Court (ICC), effective immediately.

The three West African countries led by the military claim that the International Criminal Court is being utilised as a tool for “neo-colonialist repression.”

In a joint statement, they announced plans to establish local systems for promoting peace and justice, stating that the ICC is unable to effectively manage and prosecute war crimes.

The recent move is part of the efforts by the junta to separate itself from Western influence.

The International Criminal Court (ICC) is to investigate crime issues across the world and also tries individuals charged with the gravest of crimes of concern to the international community, but many feel that the organisation has failed to address issues of war crimes, genocide and all the crimes against humanity in recent years.

Alliance of the Sahel States’ decision to withdraw from the organisation will certainly divide opinions because people are already thinking of how crime issues will be solved across these three countries.
