In a show of political strength from the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) traditional stronghold, fifteen out of the twenty-three Members of Parliament (MPs) from the Eastern Region have thrown their weight behind Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the party’s candidate for the 2028 general elections.

The endorsement was made during Dr. Bawumia’s regional tour, which began in Nkawkaw, where he met party members and supporters.

The announcement was delivered by the MP for Achiase, Kofi Ahenkorah Marfo, who addressed the press on behalf of the group.

According to Marfo, the caucus of 15 MPs had reached the decision after carefully evaluating both the internal political dynamics of the NPP and the national mood ahead of the 2028 polls.

He described Dr. Bawumia as “Ghana’s most impactful Vice President” and the most marketable candidate to lead the party to victory.

“Having served faithfully and introduced groundbreaking policies, we are clear in our minds that Dr. Bawumia is the best candidate to lead us. Politically and policy-wise, he offers the strongest chance for victory in 2028,” Marfo declared.

The MPs outlined three main reasons for their support: first, Bawumia’s achievements and visibility in government; second, his personal qualities of humility, inclusiveness, and effectiveness; and third, his proven resilience in the face of political propaganda.

They argued that since the 2024 elections, many Ghanaians have come to appreciate his vision, particularly on digitalization and economic reforms, which are now gaining broader acceptance.

“Now is not the time to change direction. Doing so would set us back by another 16 years,” Marfo cautioned, urging party members across the country to rally firmly behind the Vice President’s candidacy.

The endorsement list features some of the region’s high-profile MPs, including Kojo Oppong Nkrumah (Ofoase Ayirebi), Frank Annoh-Dompreh (Nsawam Adoagyiri), Sammi Awuku (Akuapem North), Kingsley Agyemang (Abuakwa South), and Kofi Okyere Baafi (New Juaben South). Others include Ida Adjoa Asiedu (Ayensuano), Korkor Asante (Atiwa West), Akwasi Acquah (Oda), Nana Ampaw Addo-Frempong (Abuakwa North), Frank Asiedu Bekoe (Suhum), Charles Asuako Owiredu (Abirem), and both MPs representing Fanteakwa North and South constituencies.

The Eastern Region, historically regarded as the “world bank” of the NPP, has consistently delivered some of the party’s largest electoral victories since the return to constitutional rule.

Analysts say the backing of a majority of its MPs could prove decisive in shaping the NPP’s internal succession battle as preparations quietly begin for the 2028 presidential race.

The group of MPs also pledged to take their endorsement beyond words, committing to mobilize grassroots support and campaigning vigorously across the region to consolidate Dr. Bawumia’s position.

“We will work hard in every constituency and encourage all party members to remain resolute in supporting his candidature,” Marfo assured.

The move by the Eastern MPs also reinforces his deepening influence within the party, especially in its most loyal electoral base.
