A tragic incident has shocked residents of Suhum Ali, a suburb of Suhum in the Eastern Region, after the lifeless body of a newborn was discovered in a toilet pit on Tuesday morning.
According to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), an emergency call was placed around 6:30 a.m. by concerned residents near the Gateway Preparatory School.
An 11-member rescue team, led by Assistant Station Officer (ASTNO) Danso Henry, arrived at the scene within 14 minutes.
The rescuers carefully conducted a recovery operation and at about 7:00 a.m., they retrieved the body of a one-week-old baby boy.
Unfortunately, he was already dead by the time he was pulled out.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the baby may have been dumped into the pit latrine by his mother, who has since gone into hiding.
Police in Suhum have taken custody of the body and have opened investigations into the matter to trace and arrest the suspect.
