Cape Verde is just a win away from qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after securing a dramatic 3-3 draw in Libya.
The match, held at the 11 June Stadium in Tripoli, began with Libya asserting early dominance.
The home side struck twice in the first half through Rony Lopes’ own goal in the first minute. Arcanjo equalised in the 29th minute for Cape Verde. Ezoo El Mariamy’s strike in the 42nd minute helped Libya go to the break with a 2-1 lead.
Al Shwaili restored Libya’s two-goal lead in the 58th minute.
Cape Verde knew they needed a point at least at all costs and decided to fight. They scored two quick goals to flip the scoreline to 3-3, with Cabral and Semedo’s goals helping the visitors to keep their lead at the top of the table.
The result leaves Cape Verde at the top of Group D with six wins and one draw, while Libya sits third with four wins, two losses, and one draw.
Cameroon, in the second half, scored twice through Ngameleu and Mbeumo to keep their slim hope for the sole slot alive. Mauritius were able to contain the Indomitable Lions for only 56 minutes.
Eswatini and Angola played a 2-2 draw in the dead rubber match. The minnows scored twice early in the second half through Justice Figuareido’s brace, but Buatu and Papel Ary’s late goals denied Ewatini an incredible win against Angola.
