The New Patriotic Party (NPP) will today, Friday, October 10, 2025, conduct a balloting exercise at its national headquarters in Asylum Down, Accra, to determine the positions of its presidential aspirants on the ballot paper for the upcoming January 31, 2026 presidential primaries.

The decision comes after the completion of a rigorous vetting process conducted by the party’s Presidential Elections Committee, chaired by former Defence Minister and ex-Member of Parliament for Manhyia, Dr. Kwame Addo Kufuor.

Invitation to Aspirants

In an official communication signed by William Yamoah, Secretary to the Presidential Elections Committee, all five vetted aspirants have been invited to participate in the exercise.

The letter stated: “The Chairman of the Committee has directed me to extend an invitation for your participation in a balloting process to determine your positions on the ballot paper for the upcoming January 31st Presidential primary. The event is scheduled for Friday, October 10, 2025, at the NPP Headquarters, Asylum Down, at 11:00 a.m.”

Copies of the invitation were sent to the General Secretary, Acting National Chairman, and Chairman of the Presidential Elections Committee.

The five aspirants expected to participate in the draw are:

1. Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, former Vice President of Ghana;

2. Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, former Member of Parliament for Assin Central;

3. Bryan Acheampong, MP for Abetifi.

4. Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, former Minister of Education; and

5. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, former NPP General Secretary.

Vetting Completed And Report Submitted

The vetting committee completed its work last week, submitting its report to the NPP General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, for onward transmission to the National Council.

The National Council met on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, to review the vetting report and deliberate on petitions or concerns raised by any of the aspirants.

The vetting process, which began in September, was guided by the NPP Constitution, the party’s internal electoral regulations, and relevant provisions of Articles 63 and 94 of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution.

According to party sources, all aspirants were assessed based on eligibility, loyalty, competence, and their commitment to advancing the ideals of the NPP.

Roadmap to the Primaries

Per the party’s election roadmap released in August 2025, aspirants dissatisfied with the vetting committee’s findings were given a window to petition the National Executive Committee (NEC) for review before the final list of qualified aspirants is published.

The official notice of poll is expected to be released on Friday, October 17, 2025.

The final and most anticipated phase — the National Congress to elect the NPP’s presidential candidate — will take place on Saturday, January 31, 2026, with a run-off slated for February 14, 2026, should the first round fail to produce a clear winner.
