GIS officer killed, another injured in deadly attack at Gbintri checkpoint

A tragic incident has rocked the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) after two officers on duty at the Gbintri inland checkpoint in the East Mamprusi Municipality of the North-East Region came under heavy attack in the early hours of Friday, October 3, 2025.

The assault left one officer dead and another battling for his life at a medical facility.

The Attack

According to security sources, the incident occurred around 1:30 am when unidentified assailants stormed the checkpoint, opening fire on the officers stationed there.

The gunmen, who are yet to be identified, fled the scene after the attack, leaving behind shell casings believed to be from an AK-47 rifle.

Casualties

The officers on duty, identified as Rafiq Mohammed (AICOII) and Oppong Daniel (AICOII), bore the brunt of the assault.

Rafiq Mohammed died instantly from gunshot wounds sustained during the attack.

Oppong Daniel was shot in the jaw and back. He was rushed to the Baptist Medical Centre (BMC) in Nalerigu, where he is currently receiving treatment in critical condition.

Evidence Collected

Police investigators who arrived at the scene confirmed the recovery of vital evidence. Among them were:

AK-47 shell casings believed to have been discharged by the attackers.

A GIS service rifle with registration number GH/GIS/HQACN 668516-1646, retrieved at the checkpoint.

Security Response

The swift response team was led by Superintendent Francis Brobbey, the Gambaga Municipal Police Commander.

They were joined by immigration officials under the leadership of DIS Moro Tanko Mohammed, North Regional Intelligence Officer of the Ghana Immigration Service.

The joint team secured the crime scene, retrieved evidence, and began preliminary investigations.
