Ghana defeated Comoros, their recent bogey side, 1-0 in Accra on Sunday evening to secure qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with Mohammed Kudus scoring the only goal early in the second half.
The match was the final fixture in Group I of the CAF qualifiers. With the stadium packed and the atmosphere electric and fully charged, Ghana needed just a point to confirm qualification, but they went a step further to claim all three.
The win ensured Ghana topped the group with 25 points, six ahead of second-placed Madagascar, who were mauled by Mali in Bamako 4-1.
The first half was a cagey affair, with Comoros defending resolutely and frustrating Ghana’s attacking trio of Antoine Semenyo, Jordan Ayew, and Mohammed Kudus.
Despite dominating possession, the Black Stars struggled to break down the compact Comorian defence.
Ghana’s midfield, led by Thomas Partey and Kwasi Sibo, tried to dictate the tempo, but chances were few and far between.
The teams went into the break level, with Ghana unable to convert their territorial advantage into goals.
The breakthrough came just minutes into the second half. In the 49th minute, Thomas Partey delivered a precise pass to Mohammed Kudus, who calmly slotted the ball past the Comorian goalkeeper to give Ghana the lead.
The goal lifted the spirits of the home crowd and injected confidence into the team.
The goal scorer, Kudus, who plays for Tottenham Hotspur, once again proved his value with a clutch performance in a high-stakes match.
Comoros attempted to respond with counterattacks, but their efforts lacked precision and composure in the final third.
Ghana’s defence, marshalled by Alexander Djiku and Mohammed Salisu, remained solid and disciplined.
Otto Addo’s tactical setup ensured that Ghana maintained control of the game, limiting Comoros to speculative efforts.
The final whistle confirmed Ghana’s eighth win in ten qualifier games, with only one loss and one draw throughout the campaign.
With this result, Ghana became the fifth African nation to qualify for the expanded 48-team World Cup, joining North African sides Algeria, Egypt, Morocco, and Tunisia.
The victory also served as redemption for the Black Stars, who had previously lost to Comoros in the reverse fixture and also in the 2021 AFCON.
As the team looks ahead to the global stage in 2026, fans will hope that this blend of youth and experience can replicate or surpass Ghana’s historic 2010 quarter-final run.
