The Asante Mampong Traditional Area is witnessing a new chapter in its rich history following the nomination of 51-year-old Leslie Nkansah Osei-Bonsu as the next Mamponghene.
The nomination was made by the queen mother of Mampong, Nana Agyakomaa Difie II, during a solemn traditional rites held at the Mamponghene Palace on Monday.
This nomination comes barely six months after the passing of the revered Daasebre Osei Bonsu II, who died in April 2025 at the age of 86.
His death brought an end to an illustrious reign marked by calm leadership, wisdom, and a deep commitment to the progress of Mampong and the Asante Kingdom. Following Asante custom, the Mampong Traditional Council and the Bretuo Dynasty officially informed the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, of the chief’s demise earlier this year at the Manhyia Palace, paving the way for the succession process.
According to Asante tradition, the nomination of a new chief for Mampong — the second most important stool in Asanteman after the Golden Stool — requires the formal endorsement of the Asantehene.
The Monday ceremony, therefore, signifies the beginning of the transition process, pending Otumfuo’s final approval.
The ritual performed by the queen mother is one of the most sacred in the Asante succession system, symbolizing the unity between the royal lineage and the spiritual authority of the Silver Stool.
Born on March 14, 1974, Leslie Nkansah Osei-Bonsu is not only a royal by birth but also an accomplished professional.
His educational journey began at City of Kumasi School, continued through Prempeh College, and advanced to the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), where he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Geometric Engineering.
Driven by a passion for innovation, he pursued further studies abroad, earning a Master’s degree in Geo-Information and Earth Observation from the University of Twente in the Netherlands, and another Master’s degree in Computational Science and Engineering from the University of Munich in Germany.
Professionally, Osei-Bonsu has carved a distinguished career in technology and geospatial systems management.
With over 20 years of experience in the field, he currently serves as the Product and Service Group Manager at GAF AG in Germany, where he leads advanced projects in digital engineering and geospatial intelligence.
His background in both tradition and modern science is being hailed as a unique asset for the Mampong stool.
The nomination has generated excitement across Mampong and the wider Asante Kingdom, as residents express optimism about the blend of youth, intellect, and tradition that Osei-Bonsu represents.
Many see his nomination as a sign of renewal and progress for Mampong — a town that has historically played a central role in Asante politics, culture, and education.
If confirmed by the Asantehene, Leslie Nkansah Osei-Bonsu will ascend the Silver Stool as Daasebre Osei Bonsu III, continuing a lineage that dates back centuries and carries immense influence within Asanteman.
