English manager Graham Potter is set to be named the new head coach for the Swedish national team after the sacking of Jon Dahl Tomasson two days ago.

Potter, who was recently sacked by West Ham United after a brief tenure, is reportedly close to finalising a deal with the Swedish Football Association.

His appointment comes in the wake of Sweden’s disappointing 1-0 home defeat to Kosovo, which effectively ended their hopes of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup through the group stage.

The Swedish FA is keen to bring in fresh leadership, and Potter’s familiarity with Swedish football makes him a strong candidate.

Potter in Sweden

The 50-year-old Englishman previously spent seven years in Sweden managing Ostersund, where he achieved remarkable success, including promotion to the top flight and a memorable Europa League run.

Potter has expressed deep affection for Sweden, stating, “I have feelings for Sweden. I love the country and I love Swedish football. I have a lot to be grateful for towards Swedish football”. His return is seen as a way of giving back to a football culture that helped shape his managerial career.

In interviews with Swedish media, Potter confirmed he is currently in Sweden and open to taking on the national team role. He emphasised his desire to help where he can and praised the opportunity to lead a national side as “fantastic.” His appointment is expected to bring tactical innovation and a renewed sense of purpose to the Swedish squad, which has struggled in recent international competitions.

Sweden’s expectations when Potter is appointed

If confirmed, Potter will be tasked with rebuilding the team’s morale and preparing for future tournaments, including the UEFA Nations League and the next World Cup cycle.

His experience in both Premier League and Scandinavian football positions him uniquely to bridge styles and reinvigorate Sweden’s national team setup.
