Flagbearer hopeful of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and former Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has reaffirmed his commitment to transforming Ghana into a globally competitive nation through technology-driven governance and innovation.

Speaking on the final day of his Bono East Regional tour, Dr. Bawumia outlined his track record in digitization as evidence that he possesses the competence and vision to deliver what he calls “world-class development” if elected president.

Dr. Bawumia’s remarks came at the climax of a comprehensive campaign swing across all 11 constituencies in the Bono East Region, concluding with engagements in Techiman North and South. His interactions with party delegates and supporters formed part of his ongoing “Our Journey Together” campaign, which seeks to consolidate his message of continuity, transformation, and modernization ahead of the NPP’s upcoming presidential primaries.

Digitization as Proof of Competence

Highlighting his achievements since assuming office in 2017, the former Vice President underscored the Ghana Card project as one of the administration’s most transformative national initiatives.

He described it as a revolutionary identification system that places Ghana among the few nations with a comprehensive national database.

“The Ghana Card is something very few countries have. Even the UK, America, and Canada don’t have a comprehensive national ID system, but the UK is now looking to do what Ghana has done,” he noted confidently.

The Ghana Card project, spearheaded under the National Identification Authority (NIA), has been hailed for providing a unified identity for citizens and residents, facilitating access to public services, and improving national security and data integration.

Transforming Payments and Financial Inclusion

Dr. Bawumia also cited the Mobile Money Interoperability System, launched under his supervision, as another landmark policy that has revolutionized Ghana’s financial ecosystem.

The system enables seamless transactions across different mobile networks and banks, a model that remains unmatched on the African continent.

“The number of mobile money accounts has increased from 8 million to 24 million, and MoMo agents have grown from 107,000 to over 900,000 because of this intervention,” he said.

He argued that such innovations have deepened financial inclusion, particularly among rural populations, by reducing barriers to digital payments and bringing more Ghanaians into the formal economy.

Innovation in Health and Service Delivery

Turning to the health sector, Dr. Bawumia referenced the Zipline medical drone delivery system, which delivers essential medical supplies to remote communities.

He emphasized that Ghana’s leadership in drone-based health logistics has drawn admiration from developed nations such as the United Kingdom, which he said is now exploring similar models.

He also pointed to advancements in healthcare access through digital renewal of National Health Insurance (NHIS) cards, reducing long queues and improving service efficiency nationwide.

“We’ve made it possible for Ghanaians to renew their NHIS membership from their phones. These are real solutions that make life easier for our people,” Dr. Bawumia explained.

A Vision Beyond Vice Presidency

Positioning himself as the candidate of innovation and efficiency, Dr. Bawumia urged delegates to trust in his leadership record.

He stressed that his performance as Vice President is a reflection of what he can deliver as President.

“That is why I say, when you vote for me, I will bring world-class development. You can believe me because what I have done as Vice President shows that I will do even more as President,” he declared to cheers from party faithful.

Since his appointment as Vice President in 2017, Dr. Bawumia built a political brand around digital transformation and economic modernization.

His initiatives—ranging from digital addressing systems to electronic passports and paperless port systems—have positioned him as the face of the digital economy.

Critics, however, argue that while these projects have improved efficiency, they have not been matched with broader economic stability, citing persistent inflation and youth unemployment.

Yet, within the NPP, Dr. Bawumia remains one of the most influential figures and a frontrunner in the party’s quest for a successor to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
