The former Vice President and flagbearer hopeful of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has made a passionate appeal to delegates of the party to rally behind him as the best candidate to lead the NPP into the 2028 general elections.

He insists that his record and commitment to the party’s vision make him the most capable to reclaim political power for the NPP.

Dr. Bawumia, who just concluded campaign tour of the Bono Region, made these remarks when he addressed a packed auditorium of delegates at the Berekum College of Education.

His visit marks a key moment in his renewed efforts to consolidate support ahead of the party’s presidential primaries scheduled for January 31, 2026.

Winning Back Old Ground

The former Vice President’s campaign stop in Berekum East was particularly symbolic.

The constituency was one of the few that voted against him in the 2023 NPP primaries, where internal divisions cost him crucial delegate votes.

This time, however, the local leadership and delegates have pledged to “correct their mistake.”

Kwaku Kamkam, the NPP Chairman for Berekum East, told the crowd that the constituency had learned from the past.

“We voted against Dr. Bawumia last time, but this time we will give him the victory he deserves,” he said, drawing loud applause from the audience.

Rebuttal of Critics

Addressing claims by political opponents that he is the “worst-performing flagbearer” in the NPP’s electoral history, Dr. Bawumia dismissed such narratives as propaganda without factual grounding.

“Those who make such claims are peddling falsehoods. The data does not support them,” he said.

Dr. Bawumia argued that his 41% electoral performance in the 2024 general elections — though not enough to secure victory — remains the highest percentage attained by any NPP flagbearer who did not win a national election.

He drew comparisons with previous candidates such as Professor Albert Adu Boahen, John Agyekum Kufuor (before his eventual victory in 2000), and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in his earlier runs.

“I Hold the Baton

The former Vice President likened his current position to that of a runner carrying the party’s baton in a relay race.

“I am holding the baton of the NPP, and no one can take it from me. Those spreading lies only want to distract us from the mission ahead,” he declared confidently.

He urged delegates not to allow themselves to be swayed by what he described as orchestrated misinformation from opponents within and outside the party.

“Look at my record, my service, and my sacrifice. I have been loyal to the NPP through thick and thin. I have delivered on the mandate given to me, and I am ready to lead us to victory,” he told them.

Campaign Momentum And Party Dynamics

Dr. Bawumia’s tour of the Bono Region forms part of a larger nationwide campaign aimed at reconnecting with grassroots delegates and neutralizing internal resistance ahead of the 2026 contest.

His four competitors — all prominent figures within the party — have been touring other regions, setting the stage for what political analysts describe as one of the NPP’s most competitive internal races in years.

The former Vice President’s strategy appears focused on consolidating his traditional base while making inroads in areas where he underperformed in 2023.

Party insiders say Bawumia’s campaign message — centered on loyalty, competence, and data-driven leadership — resonates with many delegates seeking a leader who can bridge the ethnic and religious diversity of the party.

He has remained confident, positioning himself as the most experienced and unifying figure capable of leading the party’s renewal and securing power in 2028.
