AFCON 2025 is just around the corner, with host nation Morocco almost done with preparations.
The competition is expected to be the most competitive and well-organised AFCON in history.
Countries used the just-ended World Cup qualifiers as the main preparation for the tournament in North Africa.
Mali used two coaches in the qualifiers, with Belgian tactician Tom Saintfiet replacing Eric Chelle, who began the qualifiers on a very poor note.
CAFOnline.com caught up with Tom Saintfiet in an interview, and the head coach admitted they are not among the favourites but expect them to excel.
“What is Mali’s true status going into this AFCON— favourites, outsiders, or challengers?” quizzed CAFonline.com.
“I read an article on France 24 describing us as ‘big outsiders,’ and I think that’s accurate.
“The main favourites are Morocco, Algeria, Senegal, and Nigeria — nations with great experience and consistency.
Mali have always flattered to deceive in AFCON as their best finish was a runner-up in 1972 when they were beaten 3-2 by the Congo Republic in Cameroon.
Many football fans tip Morocco to end their wait for the coveted trophy since winning it in 1976. Their last best performance was when they reached the finals in 2004, losing 2-1 to the host nation, Tunisia.
For Mali, the mission is clear: to be an outsider capable of staying until the very end. We now have the quality to compete with the best.
Senegal’s consistency in the last two years makes them a hot contender, with Algeria and Nigeria also among the contenders, per Tom Saintfiet.
The Belgian also thinks that other countries can also spring surprises. “But several others can also win the title: Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, Egypt, Tunisia, and even South Africa”.
Mali has targeted semi-finals as they believe they have the quality to challenge the creme-de-la-creme at the big stage.
The 2025 AFCON will be played across 2025 and 2026. The opening game will be played on December 21st, and January 18th is set for the finals.
