A sorrowful scene unfolded at Nsawam in the Eastern Region on Saturday, November 1, 2025, when an articulated truck lost control and rammed into a crowd of mourners attending a funeral ceremony, killing at least eight people and leaving more than thirty others with serious injuries.

According to eyewitnesses, the devastating incident occurred during the funeral rites of a popular okada (commercial motorcycle) rider whose death had drawn a large number of sympathizers from across the community.

As mourners gathered along the roadside to observe the procession, a heavy-duty truck transporting a 40-foot container reportedly suffered a brake failure while descending a slope near the funeral grounds.

The vehicle veered off its lane and crashed directly into the assembled crowd.

The impact was catastrophic. Several individuals were trapped under the massive trailer, while others sustained severe injuries, including broken limbs and deep cuts.

Eyewitness videos circulating on social media captured distressing scenes of bloodied victims and frantic bystanders attempting to rescue those pinned beneath the truck.

Some victims were said to have lost their legs, while others suffered internal injuries due to the force of the collision.

Residents and local volunteers immediately mobilized to rescue the injured, transporting them in private vehicles and motor tricycles to the Nsawam Government Hospital and other nearby health facilities.

Medical personnel reportedly struggled to manage the sudden influx of casualties, prompting calls for blood donations and urgent support from neighboring districts.

Officers from the Nsawam District Police Command swiftly arrived at the scene to secure the area and begin preliminary investigations.

According to police sources, the truck driver, who allegedly attempted to flee the scene, was later apprehended and is assisting with investigations to determine whether mechanical failure, negligence, or overspeeding contributed to the accident.
