The 13th African Games was hosted by Accra and Cape Coast between March 8 and 23 in 2024.
Nicknamed the African Olympics, Ghana welcomed almost the entire continent in grand style, with the Borteyman Complex and the University of Ghana hosting the majority of the events.
Many Ghanaians expressed their concerns over the cost of the 15-day event, where many believed there had been financial mismanagement by the organisers.
Reportedly, Ghana spent approximately $195 million on infrastructure and facilities, with $145 million for the Borteyman Sports Complex, $34 million for the University of Ghana Stadium and Rugby Pitch, and $16 million for the Games Village.
Also, tags for journalists cost around $4 million and ‘Awaakye’, a popular Ghanaian meal, also costs $15 million, much to the shock of Ghanaians.
With the current audit exercise across all sectors in Ghana, the Auditor General has been ordered by the president to investigate how and why nearly $200 million was spent on the 13th All-African Games.
The National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) submitted a report forcing the president to request a probe into how events unfolded, as he promised to ensure accountability and transparency.
The audit will centre on five critical areas: procurement and contracting procedures, financial oversight and expenditure tracking, infrastructure development and delivery, asset verification and management, and institutional governance.
Investigations will be made into the origins and disbursement of funds, evaluate project costs.
