The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Parliament has referred 12 public institutions to the Attorney-General and Minister for Justice for prosecution over their failure to recover funds that were wrongfully paid.

Among the institutions cited are the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) and the Ridge Hospital in Accra.

The decision follows persistent non-compliance by the affected institutions, which failed to take corrective measures within the required 30-day period after the Auditor-General’s report was issued.

The Ranking Member of the PAC, Samuel Atta Mills, emphasized that institutions that haven’t complied within the specified period should face prosecution.

Institutions Referred

Specific details about the institutions and the amounts involved vary, but notable mentions include:
– Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH): Failed to recover an unearned salary totalling GH¢3 million
– Regional Health Directorate of Agona East: Did not respond regarding Tier Two contributions
– Amansie South: Also among those being referred

Enforcement Efforts

The PAC’s directive is part of its ongoing efforts to ensure accountability and enforcement of the Auditor-General’s recommendations, particularly in cases involving financial irregularities across public institutions. This move aims to promote transparency and accountability in the management of public funds.

By referring these institutions to the Attorney-General for prosecution, the PAC is taking a firm stance against financial malfeasance and seeking to recover funds wrongfully paid.
