The Drunkards Association of Ghana has announced a nationwide alcohol break from November 10th to 17th, 2025, in a bold move aimed at promoting health awareness and responsible drinking.

This initiative, which comes as part of the association’s annual wellness campaign, will see members voluntarily abstain from alcohol for seven days.

The leadership says the break is not only symbolic but also practical, offering a moment of reflection and renewal for individuals who regularly consume alcohol.

During the week-long hiatus, the association will partner with health professionals to conduct free medical screenings across selected regions.

These screenings will focus on liver health, blood pressure, and general wellness checks to encourage members to take their health seriously.

Organisers say the initiative is open to both registered members and the general public, especially those who may be struggling with alcohol-related health issues but lack access to proper care.

The association’s president, Mr Moses Onyah, popularly known as “Dry Bones,” emphasised that the break is not a punishment but a proactive step toward self-care.

He noted that while the group is often seen as a humorous or controversial body, its members are committed to using their platform to promote positive change. “We drink, yes, but we also think,” he said. “This break is about showing that we can be responsible and still enjoy life in moderation.”

Public reaction to the announcement has been mixed, with some praising the initiative as a step in the right direction, while others question its effectiveness.

Nonetheless, the association remains optimistic, hoping the campaign will spark broader conversations about alcohol use and health in Ghana.

As the week approaches, members are being encouraged to prepare mentally and physically for the break, with support hotlines and counselling services set to be available throughout the period.
