Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has expressed profound sorrow over the tragic stampede at the El-Wak Sports Stadium that claimed the lives of six potential recruits into the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) and left several others injured.

The incident, which occurred on November 12, 2025, during the 2025/2026 recruitment exercise, has reignited national concern over safety protocols in large-scale recruitment events.

Akufo-Addo, who had just returned from Angola, described the news as devastating and conveyed deep condolences to the bereaved families, while also extending his sympathies to the injured and their relatives.

In a public statement, he expressed hope that victims and their families would find renewed strength amid the trauma.

“I convey to the bereaved families my deep condolences and wish the potential recruits in hospital a rapid recovery from their injuries, and indeed, from the accompanying trauma to all who were at the El Wak stadium, their parents or guardians, and their loved ones. It is my hope that each day will bring you renewed strength,” Akufo-Addo said.

Meanwhile, former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia also issued condolences, emphasizing solidarity with affected families and praying for the recovery of those injured.

“My condolences go out to the families of the young Ghanaians who lost their lives today at the El Wak stadium. May the injured recover quickly, and the souls of our departed ladies rest in peace,” he stated.

The El-Wak Stampede

The tragedy unfolded amid a nationwide recruitment exercise by the Ghana Armed Forces, which had been extended due to technical challenges on the recruitment portal.

Hundreds of young applicants had gathered at the El-Wak Sports Stadium in Accra, resulting in overcrowding and a surge that led to intense pushing and jostling at the gates.

Security personnel and medical teams responded, but six young applicants lost their lives, and dozens were hospitalized, some in critical condition at the 37 Military Hospital.
