Malawi researchers from Kamuzu University of Health Sciences are seeking collaboration with Ghanaian institutions after touring Ghana’s advanced herbal medicine sector.

A delegation from the Kamuzu University of Health Sciences in Malawi recently visited Ghana to explore its herbal medicine industry, which they praised as a leader on the continent.

The researchers were particularly impressed by Ghana’s regulatory framework, which governs herbal products, practitioners, and training programs.

They noted that Ghana’s structured approach to herbal medicine sets it apart from many other African nations, making it an ideal model for learning and collaboration.

During their tour, the Malawian team engaged with key stakeholders, including the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and Ebenage Herbal Production and Consult, the producers of Hepa Plus.

These institutions were highlighted for their contributions to research, product development, and education in herbal medicine.

The researchers expressed interest in forming partnerships that would allow for knowledge exchange, joint research initiatives, and capacity building to strengthen Malawi’s own herbal sector.

Dr Kondwani Chiumia, a pharmacist and lecturer at Kamuzu University, emphasised the importance of regional cooperation in advancing traditional medicine.

He stated that Ghana’s success in integrating herbal medicine into mainstream healthcare offers valuable lessons for Malawi.

The visit marks a significant step toward fostering inter-African collaboration in health sciences and promoting the development of safe, effective, and scientifically validated herbal remedies.
