The New Patriotic Party (NPP) on Sunday, November 16, 2025, gathered to commemorate the 13th anniversary of the passing of former Vice President Alhaji Aliu Mahama, a statesman remembered across political divides for his integrity, discipline, and service to Ghana.

The ceremony, held in Accra, drew national figures including the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Dr. Osman Nuhu Sharubutu; former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo; former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and his wife, Hajia Samira Bawumia; as well as Members of Parliament and family representatives.

The commemorative Adua, an annual Islamic prayer ritual for the departed, has over the years evolved into a moment for the NPP to reflect on the values the late Vice President embodied—service, humility, and national unity.

This year’s edition took on a deeper emotional tone as former President Akufo-Addo offered a reflective tribute, weaving together personal memories and political history.

Akufo-Addo recalled meeting Aliu Mahama in the late 1990s during the NPP’s expansion efforts in the Northern Region.

At a time when the party was working to establish a stronger national presence, Aliu Mahama’s home in Tamale became a hub for party organizers — a place of hospitality, strategy, and brotherhood.

“His house was where we would all go and socialise and eat,” he noted, describing the late Vice President as a generous and welcoming figure who played a quiet but pivotal role in strengthening the party’s grassroots influence.

The former president described Aliu Mahama as “a most honourable, respectable man” whose loyalty to Ghana remained unquestionable.

He highlighted their longstanding friendship, which continued through their shared years in government and long after leaving office.

“This was a man of great integrity, who worked very hard for our country,” Akufo-Addo said, adding that Aliu Mahama’s death in 2012 remains “a matter of profound sadness.”

Since his passing, Aliu Mahama’s legacy has continued to shape the NPP’s discourse on leadership and public morality. As Ghana’s first Muslim Vice President, he championed discipline in public life and youth development—initiatives that earned him broad national respect.

His son, Farouk Aliu Mahama, immediate past Member of Parliament for Yendi, has often referenced his father’s principles as guiding forces in his own political journey.

Akufo-Addo expressed gratitude to the family for inviting him to join the commemoration, extending well-wishes to Farouk, his siblings, and the entire Aliu Mahama family. “I wish them the continuing blessings of the Almighty God,” he added.

Thirteen years after his passing, the late Vice President’s memory remains a unifying thread for the NPP—one that party stalwarts continue to draw upon as they reflect on the values that shaped his public service and the mark he left on the political landscape.
