It was clear that Moroccan and Paris Saint-Germain right-back Achraf Hakimi was going to pip Egyptian and Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah, as well as Nigerian and Galatasaray striker Victor Osimhen, for the coveted Men’s Player of the Year award.
Achraf became the first Moroccan since Mustapha Hadji to win the African Footballer of the Year award in 1998, when he was a star player for Spanish side Deportivo La Coruña.
Hakimi has finished as runner-up in 2024 to Osimhen and in 2025 to Ademola Lookman, but finally won it after winning a treble with French giants Paris Saint-Germain, where he scored 13 goals and provided 17 assists.
In other categories, Cape Verde’s Bubista won Coach of the Year after guiding the tiny Cape Verde to their first World Cup. Morocco’s Morocco’s U-20 team won Men’s National Team of the Year after winning the U-20 World Cup in Chile. Tanzania’s Clement Mzize won Goal of the Year.
In the women’s category, Morocco’s Ghizzlane Chebbak won Player of the Year, while Nigeria was voted for as the Team of the Year. D.R. Congo and Pyramid FC’s striker Fiston Mayele was crowned Interclub Player of the Year, with Pyramid winning the Club of the Year.
